Weather in Omiš
Two factors influence the microclimate in Omiš. The first is definitely the mountain massif that surrounds the city. The second is the Cetina River. On one side, the coastal mountains shield Omiš from the north wind. On the other hand, when a gusty bura blows, the temperature can drop by several degrees. In turn, the Cetina River Canyon is a corridor through which cool air penetrates into Omiš.
It has such an impact on the city that it is always a few degrees cooler here than in nearby towns.
In the summer this is a big plus, because the heat in Croatia can be really annoying. Therefore, these few degrees are always desirable. On the other hand, in winter it is slightly less comfortable with blowing winds.
The climate in Omiš
Local and seasonal winds occur in Omiš. During the whole year, the aforementioned bura blows here, as well as sirocco and jugo. They are especially activated in winter, while in spring and summer there is mistral, which brings cool air. Additionally, one of the strongest winds on the Adriatic can be observed throughout the year – tramontana. It is similar to the mistral, but mainly heralds unstable weather and causes large waves at sea.
The rains in Omiš are Mediterranean in nature. This means that spring and summer are rather dry seasons with scanty precipitation. In the colder part of the year, however, rainfall is three times more frequent. However, the average annual rainfall is not overwhelming, because it is barely 809 mm. The rainiest months are November, December and January, and the smallest chance that we get wet is in July. As for snowfall and severe frosts, they are extremely rare in Omiš, to the extent that the last severe winter took place here in 1942. Long lasting low temperatures caused damage to the cultivation of figs, olives and cereals.
