Waterproof kayak bags. What to choose and buy? 5l, 15l, 20l, 30l, 40l or 50l?

The use of waterproof bags is very wide – from kayaking, cycling and sailing. They are needed wherever we want to protect our things – not only against water, but also against sand, for example.

Will the waterproof bag give us 100% certainty that our luggage will not get wet? How does it ensure water resistance? What capacity of bags can we find in stores?

Here are the answers to these questions, as well as to many others.

100% waterproof

Waterproof bags are made of waterproof materials, for example impregnated nylon, tarpaulin or hypalon, and have taped seams. Water resistance is also provided by a special closure – we roll the material and snap the buckle. Let’s add that for the sack to fulfill its role, we must roll such a sack at least 4 times.

How to check the waterproofness?

Waterproofness classes

When buying a sack, bag or backpack that is supposed to be waterproof, we often don’t know how much they actually protect our luggage. However, you can easily check it on the attached leaflet. Water resistance levels are determined using an eight-level IPX scale according to the IEC 529 standard.

Let’s see:

  1.     IPX0 – means no protection against water,
  2.     IPX1 – protection against rainfall with a intensity of 3 – 5 mm, lasting no more than 10 minutes,
  3.     IPX2 – protection against water drops falling at an angle of 15 ° from different directions,
  4.     IPX3 – protection against splashing water from different directions at an angle of up to 60 °,
  5.     IPX4 – protection against splashing water up to 10 liters per minute,
  6.     IPX5 – protection against flowing water up to 12.5 liters per minute,
  7.     IPX6 – protection against flowing water with the flow rate up to 100 liters per minute,
  8.     IPX7 – protection in case of equipment immersion to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes,
  9.     IPX8 – protection against constant immersion in water to the designated depth (for example up to 6 and even 30 meters).

In the stores you will find both small waterproof sachets, for example for documents, and larger models. They usually have a capacity of 5l to 10l, 15l, 20l, 30l, 40l, 50l up to 100 liters.

Versatile use

Waterproof bags and backpacks, as well as sailing bags can have a lot of uses, for example:

  •      As a transport sack for transporting luggage on a car roof,
  •      As a cover for equipment on a bicycle trip,
  •      As a luggage sack for sailboats and yachts,
  •      As a transport sack for kayak,
  •      As a sack for wet and dirty clothes.

A smaller waterproof bag can be used as a first aid kit or it can be used to transport liquids or cosmetics that could wet our luggage.

Waterproof kayak bags

Waterproof bags are very often used during kayaking trips. Models specifically designed for such occasions are equipped with additional features and amenities. For example, kayak sacks may have an elongated, conical shape that will help us arrange them in a kayak.

And in addition:

  •     They contain handles that allow them to be strapped to the deck,
  •     They are buoyant,
  •     They have a strap that allows them to be worn comfortably,
  •     The so-called “window” runs through the entire length of the bag – a transparent part that allows you to quickly and easily find things in the bag, without having to remove all the luggage.
