Lefkada is a Greek island on the Ionian Sea West of mainland Greece. In the ancient times, it was a Corynthian colony and it’s been speculated to be the location of Homer’s Ithaca, rather than the island that today has the name. The island has a long history of foreign rule: from 1295 on it has belonged to various Italian noble families or city states (most prominently Venice), Serbs, Angevins, Ottoman Empire, Venice again, Russian Empire and Great Britain, before finally being reunited with independednt Greece in 1864.
