Pomorie is a seaside resort town located around 20 km from the larger Burgas and 18 km from the popular Sunny Beach. It was founded in 5th or 4th century BC by Greek colonists as Anchailos, a name meaning in Greek exacly the same that Pomorie means in Bulgarian – “by the sea”. It remained a Greek city under larger colony Sozopol, Roman Empire and Constantine Empire until 1453, when it was conquered by Ottoman Empire, but remained culturally Greek until early 20th century, when anti-Greek pogroms took place and forced Greek families to flee. It became part of Bulgaria in 1885, when the country regained its independence.
